Last week, in the course of linking to my less-than-flattering review of Luke Haines' new album, I admitted: "I'm not very comfortable with the idea of being critical of artists at the present moment, or of trashing anyone's creative pursuits." There are exceptions, of course. Take Van Morrison, for example, whose new double album called (god help us) Latest Record Project Volume 1 has been on the receiving end of a delicious booting from the Guardian's Alexis Petridis.
Anyone who can claim with smug, sneering superiority and not a shred of irony "I'm not a slave to the system like you" deserves all they get. As Petridis notes, there certainly is an irony in the fact that - like Laurence Fox, Piers Morgan and so many others - the tedious arse uses the platform afforded to him (in this case, by a major record label prepared to put out a double LP) to drone on about how he's being silenced. If only.
