Pretty much every visit we make to Northumberland involves trips to Barter Books and Cragside, but one place to which we didn't make our customary pilgrimage on our most recent sojourn was Longsands in Tynemouth. It's not a beach I ever went to as a child, but one we've fallen in love with since my brother and sister-in-law got married in the Grand Hotel overlooking the sea in 2005.
In a piece for the BBC site, Christian Petersen has set out to capture a day in the life of the beach, talking to the surfers who regularly brave the North Sea from its shore. The North East may not be as readily associated with surfing as Devon and Cornwall, but it's clear that Longsands exerts a strong pull over those who ride the waves in pursuit of pleasure.
