Quote of the day

"The detail is in the minutiae, even down to the spacing on the ventilation holes. The configuration of the holes is actually taken from the position of some of the roses on the three lions crest. It's a bit of a Da Vinci Code, a 'rose code' if you like."

And there you were thinking the new England away shirt (or should that be England Away shirt?) looks plain at best and naff at worst. The guys at Umbro are full of bright ideas - such as launching the shirt by having the gobby frontman of a bunch of boorish testosterone-fuelled gibbons parade around in it on foreign soil making "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" gestures. Still (drum roll) I suppose that's how it'll mostly be worn - though not, I suspect, by those who've publicly professed to support the Republic of Ireland.

I don't actually mind the shirt design but your sourcing of that article about Eire is a slice of superb mental record keeping!

Wish I could take the credit for that, but Marina Hyde picked up on it in her Guardian piece.
