Let them eat buns
On the subject of eccentric local traditions, Abingdon's very own has attracted the interest of the national media, as well as having a blog dedicated to it and a new coffee shop/cafe named in its honour.
Sadly I'll be missing the excitement, being away on the day of the royal wedding, but the Town Council are offering two lucky people the chance to assist the Mayor and councillors in raining the estimated 4000 currant buns down onto the heads of the assembled plebs from the roof of the County Hall. Except the County Hall is currently undergoing restoration work and so will still be swaddled in scaffolding and netting. What a prize, eh?
But might this not be potentially hazardous if the buns aren't completely fresh? From that height, a stale one propelled with force could probably take out a pensioner. Something to give the Council's Health and Safety Executive sleepless nights...
