If Ken Loach read Underdogs, he might be seriously tempted to come out of retirement to make one more film. The novel's Northern setting and themes of post-industrial hardship, working-class community and identity would be enough to make his eyes light up.
The book is, in the words of its author Louise Powell, about the "lost world" of "flapping" - unlicensed greyhound racing. Her objective, she told the BBC's Evie Lake, was "to reconstruct that world, not just how it looked" - an objective she has certainly achieved.
