Small wonders

The 33 1/3 back catalogue is an extraordinary treasure trove: pocket-sized books dedicated to single albums, written by knowledgeable fans at liberty to take a variety of approaches but all offering insight and passion on their chosen subject. And yet (to my shame) I've only read one book in the whole series: Leah Kardos' relatively recently published book on Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love.

With so much to enjoy, I'm eager to tuck in. But, as with (say) the albums of The Fall, the sheer number is daunting, and it's hard to know exactly where to start. Which is where Top10Nathan's selection of six of the best comes in very handy.

The two picks that appeal to me the most are Kid A by Marvin Lin, lauded as "a genuinely fresh and entertaining read on one of the most enthralling left turns in music history", and Spiderland by Scott Tennent, because it's an album that is widely (and indeed increasingly) celebrated yet still shrouded in mystery.

However, top of my to-read list is Joe Gross' book on Fugazi's In On The Kill Taker, which - prompted by Top10Nathan's post - is finally winging its way to me now.
