Sparks of inspiration

Episodes of Amoeba's What's In My Bag? routinely throw up surprises, and this recent one with Russell Mael kicks off with a doozy: the revelation that Sparks are working on a second movie musical with none other than John Woo in the director's chair. I'd hazard a guess that it's not a collaboration that many people will have had on their 2025 bingo card.

What comes as less of a surprise is that Mael's selection is as splendidly eclectic as they come: everything from Philip Glass and modern opera to K-pop and Derek & Clive, via The Who, Traffic, Little Richard and Kate Bush.

Talking about John Coltrane's A Love Supreme prompts him to recall how he and brother Ron used to frequent jazz club afternoon matinees when underage and sit nursing Cokes. Like Melvins' Steven McDonald, he chooses a DVD of the TAMI Show, waxing lyrical about James Brown's performance and how it set headliners the Rolling Stones up for a fall.

Meanwhile, the snippets of the new Underworld album have really whetted my appetite for their Green Man Mountain Stage slot next month...
