Ear defenders

In "even a stopped clock is right twice a day" news, Labour are looking to push through amendments to licensing rules that will benefit music venues by protecting them from noise complaints.

The BBC's Emily Atkinson has reported that the critical proposed change is that "developers seeking to build near venues would be told to soundproof buildings". Shifting the onus for soundproofing to avoid punishing pre-existing venues for finding themselves surrounded by new residential properties is a total no-brainer that should have been implemented long ago.

Better late than never, though, I guess - and it goes to show that pressure from the Music Venue Trust and high-profile struggles such as that of Manchester's Night & Day Cafe have helped to get the issue on the agenda and may yet reap wider rewards.
