I didn't get to Gruff Rhys' album launch gig at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama last night - a very special evening, by all accounts - but can at least console myself with the fact that I've known for a couple of months that the record in question, Sadness Sets Me Free, is a belter, having been granted review access back in November. As its title suggests, the vibe is (in its creator's words) "euphoric melancholy". There's a pleasure to be gleaned from wallowing in your feelings, but despite the frequently heavy subject matter, the album ultimately has a positive outlook - which makes it very much comparable to his pal Bill Ryder-Jones' latest, the similarly loveable Iechyd Da.
