Conservative MP Philip Davies yesterday voiced his opposition to a law that would require rental properties to be fit for human habitation, on the grounds that it would put "a huge burden on landlords". Is it just me, or are the Tories fast becoming parodies of themselves?
Davies cited his personal experience as both a landlord and a tenant as a reason why his opinion is valid - though I'm fairly sure he won't ever have had to put up with a squalid, unsafe property that might be harmful to his health because it was all he could afford. According to a Citizens Advice study, 740,000 households in the UK aren't quite so lucky.
