Back to the future

As visions of the future - the year 2000, as imagined back at the beginning of the twentieth century - go, these are a very mixed bunch. Some are remarkably prescient - particularly the image of agricultural mechanisation - but to my knowledge the whale-bus doesn't yet exist (more's the pity) and underwater croquet hasn't taken off either.
