The best thing since sliced bread

Many happy returns to one of mankind's finest culinary inventions, the humble sandwich, which is celebrating its 250th birthday. All hail to the fourth Earl of Sandwich - without his popularising of the noble snack we'd be gastronomically and spiritually impoverished. Credit to the current Earl of Sandwich for declaring his favourite sandwich to be "roast beef and hot horseradish on freshly baked bread" - a man after my own heart.
