Branded a leftist "troublemaker" and subject to the unwelcome attentions of the House of Un-American Activities Committee, photographer Lisette Model could have been forgiven for avoiding controversy and lying low. And in some respects it seems she did - amassing an enormous number of pictures of key players in jazz's golden era, themselves under suspicion by McCarthy and his cronies, but keeping quiet about it.
Thankfully, the photos - of everyone from Billie Holiday to Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie - were discovered and have now been published in a book. Miss Rosen has told the story for Huck.
