"It seemed to me incredibly human and enjoyable"

At a time when major music festivals - even Glastonbury, arguably - are becoming increasingly sanitised and corporate, David Hurn's pictures of the 1969 and 1970 Isle of Wight Festivals are a reminder of their roots in the hippie era.

Typically trained more often on the crowd than on the performers, his camera captured chaos, communality, joy and freedom. And not a VIP lanyard, mobile phone advert or overpriced pint of Carlsberg in sight.
