Of all the obituaries for Mark Hollis, surely there aren't any that are as personal and powerful as the one Wyndham Wallace has written for the Quietus. He traces Talk Talk's transformation from a quasi-New Romantic pop outfit to a band now seen as art-rock pioneers, reflects on Hollis' extreme reluctance to speak about his music and subsequent retreat from the public gaze, and confesses that what makes albums like Spirit Of Eden so special remains incomprehensible and indefinable.
I bought the latter some time ago and am yet to fall for it, but eulogies like Wallace's suggest that perseverance holds the promise of rich rewards.
