The decision taken last week to launch air strikes on IS in Syria was depicted as a hugely significant moment - and it undoubtedly was, though perhaps not in the way that David Cameron and chums would have us believe. The determination to show solidarity with the US, Russia and France was ultimately most important factor - the actual impact of the UK's contribution to the bombing is likely to be negligible. The reactions of a selection of Syrians to the decision underline the complexity and delicacy of the situation - and exhibit little optimism that bombing IS from the air will have much effect other than causing collateral damage, stoking resentment and aiding IS' recruitment drive.
