"Awful, ugly, misleading, cynical and irresponsible."
James Kirkup on Theresa May's attack on immigrants and immigration at the Tory party conference. You'd expect to read as much in the pages of the Guardian or the Independent - but the fact that it appeared in the Telegraph is surprising and refreshing.
The Independent's little brother i paper has flagged up three of the most glaring inaccuracies in a speech that the Mail laughably but predictably called "the truth", including the suggestion that immigration forces UK natives out of jobs, which is undermined by the findings of May's own staff.
Meanwhile, here's the Guardian's Gary Younge demolishing May's claim that it's immigration that's resulting in a lack of cohesion in Britain, pointing instead to the real source of the problem: the Tories themselves and their pursuit of policies that are increasing regional inequity.
