While its title might suggest a celebration of that most venerable of institutions, the greasy spoon, Lewis Bassett's The Full English is substantially more sophisticated and satisfying: a brief social history of some of the cornerstones of British food culture. Given its publication by Verso, it was always likely to tickle the synapses as well as the tastebuds, and it certainly leaves the reader with plenty to chew on.
