Happy first birthday to the Corp! Over the last year, we've been regular visitors - for coffees and beers at the bar, occasional haircuts at the Barber Room, Sicilian goodies from Khione, bags of vegan pick 'n' mix from Little Green Stores, a spiky addition to a bedroom windowsill from Pepe Cactus and rather a lot of wine from Wine Fiend...
Some people might grumble and mutter about gentrification, but the truth is that the old Corporation pub was no great loss to Canton and the building has provided a very welcome home to a host of independent businesses - and been a place of refuge for the likes of Heads Above The Waves and radical bookshop Shelflife since they were forced out of the old Castle Emporium. All in all, it's done a good job of living up to its billing as a "community hub".
Even closer to home, and even more frequently visited, is the Lansdowne, which is also celebrating a milestone birthday this weekend - in its case, a full decade. Fine pub grub and a great drinks selection that always features beers from local breweries - and all quite literally over the road. What more could you want?
