Ground rules


When I first heard that Tom Simmons was opening a bakery on Pontcanna Street, a mere stone's throw from Alex Gooch's place in Kings Road Yard, thoughts of turf war sprang to mind - two masters of their craft, covered in flour, armed with rolling pins and duelling at dawn.

However, Simmons isn't doing the baking himself (he's brought in others for that), Ground is actually as much a brunch spot as somewhere to pick up a loaf or a pastry, it isn't doing pizzas and the menu is not restricted to vegan-only fare. What's more, Gooch has just opened his own coffee shop and bakery elsewhere in Cardiff. Safe to say, then, that this (part of) town is big enough for the both of 'em.
