What's this? A Tory with both a conscience and a conviction that George Osborne's "fiscal self-imposed restraints" are "distinctly political rather than in the national economic interest"? Whatever next?
Iain Duncan Smith's resignation from his position as Work and Pensions Secretary over the latest proposed benefit cuts may actually have been primarily motivated by differences with his party's hierarchy over Europe, but it and the accompanying letter are likely to have caused profound discomfort to David Cameron. No wonder the prime minister claimed to be "puzzled and disappointed" by the news.
