It's grim great up north

Some of us may have known it for a while, but now it's official: according to the Sunday Times, my home town is one of the best places to live in Britain. Nice to know the judges didn't mark it down for the presence of the bagpipe museum.

On the subject of Northumberland, it was a pleasant surprise to watch the first episode of the new series of Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle and hear him using an anecdote about Shilbottle as a reason to celebrate the power of the creative imagination. The local tourist information folk and council may not have been quite so chuffed, though, given that there's likely to be a resurgence in the doctoring of signage...
