Feel good hits of the 5th September

1. 'Lies' - Churches
2. 'Hey Jane' - Spiritualized
3. 'The Nights Of Wine And Roses' - Japandroids
4. 'Pierce The Morning Rain' - Dinosaur Jr
5. 'He's Suicidal' - Shiny Darkly
6. 'Angels' - The XX
7. 'Ebb Away' - ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
8. 'Stivey Pond' - Sleepy Sun
9. 'Oscillation' - The Men
10. 'Belispeak' - Purity Ring

Notes:

1. Members of Aereogramme and The Twilight Sad team up with female vocalist to produce an absolute gem of an electro track. Until recently it was the only thing Churches had released. Thanks to Ronan of Nightshift for the tip-off.

2. Still an extraordinary video that demands repeated viewing.

3. Incendiary opening track from Celebration Rock. It turns out that the album's best appreciated as a morning wake-up call while driving to work.

4. Not yet convinced by I Bet On Sky, but this is a corker with a ripsnorting riff that makes more aggressive than the rest of the album (a good thing, in case you're wondering).

5. Danes who I saw live last week and speculated that they might be better on record - and indeed they are. Joy Division, The Jesus & Mary Chain, shoegaze - it's all good...

6. A sensational way to kick off Coexist - simultaneously understated and bold.

9. Open Your Heart is a real rag-bag of songs - not sure what to make of it, really. 'Oscillation', as you might guess, is the vaguely Krautrock one.

10. Oh-so-fashionable female-fronted Canadian electro duo. They'd have a fight on their hands if Churches could muster a full album...
