It had escaped my attention until recently, but it seems Abingdon's one and only club - a legendary one at that - has shut its doors for good. Not that it would have ever had a chance of featuring in the Reasons To Be Cheerful series, mind...
Strattons - or Stickies as it was widely known, on account of the adhesive properties of the floor once litres of booze had been slopped on it - was never likely to be the classiest joint: a windowless metal box above a furniture shop. It was open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays - you could tell by the sizeable police presence outside (as well as someone from the local army barracks, in case any drunken squaddies got themselves in trouble). The club's closure is certainly going to result in more thumb-twiddling for the local constabulary...
Having been warned off it, I only ventured in once, and that was quite enough. Cheap and lurid alcopops, simian oafs spoiling for a brawl, a hen party all wearing boiler suits, a till like something out of Open All Hours, a playlist for which the focal point seemed to be 'I Like To Move It' by Reel 2 Real.
Not exactly a sad loss.
