Hacked off?

First the celebrities, then Milly Dowler, then the parents of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, and now the families of dead servicemen and women. If you're not appalled by the actions of the News of the World and its employees, then you fucking well should be. Hopefully its nickname the News of the Screws will soon take on added meaning when more of those responsible - whether directly for the phone hacking, or for condoning it - are banged up.

Expressing digust and boycotting the paper (and other News International publications) isn't enough - here's the Guardian's Roy Greenslade on what more you can do. Start by signing this petition demanding a full public enquiry and a block on Rupert Murdoch's proposed takeover of BSkyB.

Incidentally, I wonder what Greenslade makes of his colleague Michael White's piece in defence of the paper? Inevitable that someone would try to play Devil's advocate, I suppose - but this genuinely seems to be the Journalists' Union coming to the rescue. Spectacularly ill-judged doesn't quite do the piece justice.

It's also worth remembering that the News of the World isn't the only tabloid currently in the dock - the Sun and the Mirror have both been charged with printing articles in contempt of court in relation to the Jo Yeates murder investigation. Fortunately for them, the News of the World's troubles mean it may be a good time to be able to bury bad news...
