There is power in a union

When asked to name the inspirations behind their work, artists typically cite albums, books and films, and perhaps also personal and political circumstances.

In conversation with Our Culture's Konstantinos Pappis and faced with the same question in relation to Broken Social Scene's new LP Remember The Humans, Charles Spearin offered a significantly more interesting and considered response, listing migration patterns and critical mass, compromise (in a positive sense), Care Bears, photosynthesis, mycorrhizal networks, memes and "coming to your senses".

Along the way, he talked about the art of collaboration and the value of support systems, and astutely observed that both the band and this latest album are "more like a spectrum of music rather than an identity in music". Everyone's individuality is respected, but - as he acknowledges - "I think we're better as a group than we are as individuals".
