A few days late with this, but Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast chat with Barry Cryer, recorded last year and now up online for free, is a perfect way to remember the late comedy legend. As ever, Herring manages to bring the best out of his guest, though Cryer has such a wealth of anecdotes and gags from a career of working with some of the biggest names in comedy/light entertainment that the host is largely peripheral.
As many others have commented, and indeed as Herring himself points out, Cryer was unusual in harbouring no grudges against subsequent generations of comics; on the contrary, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the contemporary stand-up scene, always keen to build bridges and excited by the latest new emerging talent. Perhaps, unlike others, he never felt threatened because he was confident of his own abilities and secure about his status, but it seems more likely that this attitude sprang from a genuine love of the art. Either way, it helps to explain why the tributes have been so numerous, cross-generational and heartfelt.
