I'll admit that when it comes to music sites my first ports of call are always Pitchfork and The Quietus, and I'm also a regular visitor to Consequence Of Sound, Loud And Quiet and Louder Than War - but the demise of Drowned In Sound nevertheless comes as a disappointment. Just as the prospect of HMV going under was bad news for the whole record shop industry, the death of the site founded 19 years ago is a significant blow for the ecosystem.
In the Facebook post announcing the news, founder Sean Adams makes mention of financial instability. It all goes to show how difficult it is to maintain such sites in the current climate. All of us - myself included - should accept that if we want to continue to read high-quality content, we need to make a financial contribution because advertising clearly isn't the answer anymore.
