Harper hoist by his own petard

It reads like the plot of an episode of The Thick Of It: immigration minister resigns over his employment of illegal immigrant. Maybe I've been watching too much House Of Cards, but Mark Harper's resignation statement and David Cameron's comment about him having "taken an honourable decision" smack of behind-the-scenes coercion from the Prime Minister.

According to Labour MP and Home Affairs Committee chairman Keith Vaz, Harper leaves an "impressive legacy". Given that that legacy includes the government ad vans emblazoned with the slogan "Go home or face arrest", reheating old National Front rhetoric from the 1970s, the embarrassment couldn't have befallen a nicer chap.
