It's been a few years now since we last went to the Abergavenny Food Festival, and it wasn't until a mooch around Cardiff's own gastronomic jamboree down at the Bay on Sunday that I realised quite how much I'd missed it.
Arriving hungry and urgently in need of substantial sustinence, we were initially frustrated in our search - but then came upon a row of tents serving up superb freshly cooked nosh. First up was a Welsh black beef burger, accompanied by a good quantity of strong cheddar and a healthy dollop of wholegrain mustard. That was swiftly followed by a large, juicy lamb burger with onions and lashings of mint sauce.
Only then did I feel sufficiently satiated to bumble around perusing the various small stalls, sampling fiery chillis and potato noodles (the latter served up as a nod to the Welsh capital's German twin, Stuttgart). Takeaway purchases duly followed: a pint of as-dry-as-it-comes Blaengawney Heartbreaker cider, a trio of Orchard Pigs' "tractor wheel" gourmet pork pies, a small truckle of gorgeously creamy Worthy cheddar. I still had room left for something sweet - and the indulgent slab of chocolate brownie I chose proved to be exquisitely gooey.
Needless to say, upon our return to Abingdon an evening meal was most definitely not required...
