Supermarket sweep

Well, there's a surprise - the Competitions Commission recommends tightening planning regulations to prevent supermarkets gaining a monopoly in a certain area and Tesco respond angrily.

If the proposed competition test was to be introduced, Tesco's legal affairs director Lucy Neville-Rolfe claims, "it would act as a brake on growth in an industry that is an important source of jobs up and down the country". Surely you mean a brake on growth for your company? And that just wouldn't do, would it?

Anyone else think there's a certain irony in Tesco complaining about the possibility of the government "intervening aggressively"? A taste of their own medicine, perhaps...

Private Eye has written at length on Tesco's aggressive tactics when setting up new stores. The company has a long and less than exemplary history on this and I hope it gets some more exposure.
