Quote of the day
"Condoms are not sure because I know that there are two countries in Europe, they are making condoms with the virus [HIV] on purpose. They want to finish with the African people. This is the programme. They want to colonise until up to now. If we are not careful we will finish in one century's time".
The, er, interesting thoughts of Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, head of the Catholic Church in Mozambique. Nice to see the Catholic Church now resorting to conspiracy theories in its apparent determination to contribute indirectly to the deaths of millions of Africans.

When I visited the Vatican a couple of years ago I was appalled by the splendour of the building compared to the Catholic Church's attitude towards Africa (and that by the simple act of sanctioning the use of condoms they could save tens of thousands of lives).
However, I blotted my copybook when I visited. Moral contradictions aside, it *is* a fantastic building. Enough to make me exclaim 'Jesus Christ!' far too loudly on entrance, anyway...
We're going to Italy for the first time next summer, and are likely to go to Rome at some point. It's quite a dilemma - do we put money in the Catholic Church's already overflowing coffers to see the Sistine Chapel, or do we give it a miss and have everyone we see back in England tell us we were mad to pass up the opportunity when it was there?
Incidentally, Richard Herring's 'Someone Likes Yoghurt' show has a great section in about Catholicism - an incisive critique and very funny with it.
