Looking for laughs

Recent recurrent searches which have led people to SWSL:

"tea cosy serviceable hat american"
"dylan moran monster transcript"
"the sound of laughter blurb peter kay"
"geordie comedian - buzzcocks"
"painted wobbly clocks that looked like eggs bill bailey"

Watching 'The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups' on C4 last night, were we, folks? So was I.

I'm not going to indulge in the usual gripes about the relative positions of different comics - "He should have been higher", "What were the British public thinking in ranking him in the Top 10?" etc etc. What I will say, though, is this:

1. The copy of Cynthia True's biography of Bill Hicks, 'American Scream', which has been sitting on my bookshelf for over a year definitely needs to be read.

2. Good on Ross Noble for admitting that, despite the fulsome praise and analysis of his act by critics, ultimately it's "just a bloke dicking about". Long may he continue to do so.

3. How on earth did the BBC ever allow Jim Davidson to host a prime-time Saturday evening show? He managed to be the nastiest, most objectionable person to appear in the programme, which, given it also featured Bernard Manning and Andrew 'Dice' Clay, was some feat.

I've read that Cynthia True book about Hicks. It's alright. It's a basic sketch of his life without much insight. You get a feel for the man, but not the comedy.

Will be interested to see what you think of it...

Well, I don't know a great deal about Hicks, but 'Love All The People' made me want to know more - that gives you a good flavour of his comedy and what drove him. (There's a review in the sidebar...)
