A round of sarcastic applause please for Newport Council, who appear determined to strip an already hard-to-love town of its last vestiges of character. There's an obvious symbolism in the fact that its Chartist mural has been torn down to make way for a new shopping centre. As with St Davids 2 in nearby Cardiff, it seems history and tradition were standing in the way of "progress".
