Pay to play

The Canadian government is apparently set to introduce application and work permit charges totalling $425 for each and every member of an international band and their entourage, for each venue on a tour. If, like me, you don't want to see Canadian gig-goers condemned to a diet of nothing but singer-songwriters, then sign this petition.

The odd thing, of course, is that this legislation is set to be introduced by the country that gave the world the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and The Arcade Fire, each with an army of members - were other countries to adopt similar rules, then the Canadian music scene's best exports would be hindered in attempts to tour beyond their own borders.
